Grabbing a couple jonney cakes and a cup of tea I raced down the path to Raphune bay. Kevin was gassing up while he waited for me. We pulled out of the bay and headed to Outer Brass to see if what we caught was still in the net.
Pulling up to Long Hole everything looked as we left it. Jumping in we checked both arms and they too were intact.
Swimming the net I found the shark. Now in broad daylight I can clearly see the big shark. Big yes, but only a nurse shark. Somehow it managed to get its head wrapped in a piece of net near the footline. Every time it shook its head it raised the footline and some of the yellow tail snappers passed underneath and escaped the net.
Kevin and I both realized we had to free the shark and to do so quickly before we lost more of our catch.
Diving down we cleared the net from the shark which was a bit of a chore. I can still feel the roughness of its skin on my fingers as it fought us while we unraveled the mess. A few minutes later we watched it’s long body swim freely outside the net along the ocean floor.
Assessing our catch we concluded most of the fish got away.
We worked the net, prepared the tuck and pulled the remaining fish into the boat.
